My Drawings
Drawing is my playtime and I experience it as a calming and meditative process. I love to create a sense of mystery with a splash of humour by using a variety of lines & shapes, patterns & colour with strong value & contrast. My starting point is often “taking a line for a walk” across the paper, thus creating an interesting composition using just line and shape. Then, working intuitively and without pre-planning, I will add colour and pattern, while leaving some areas misted over or partly hidden.
Sometimes I draw the suggestion of everyday things I love, for example, fruits, plant forms or a favourite object. At other times, my drawing is non-objective, purely abstract, allowing me to better explore and express concepts like communication or the earth beneath my feet.
Drawing is like life; things aren’t always clearly defined or visible. I like to use drawing as symbolism and a metaphor for my experience of the world around me.
My Drawing tools
I use a variety of graphite pencils from 2H to 8B and graphite sticks or powder. I favour Prisma Coloured Pencils, archival inks and watercolour pencils or crayons like Aquarelle by Caran D’Ache or Graphitint pencils by Derwent. Sometimes I’ll use pencils, inks and water media all in the same drawing. Another essential tool is my electric eraser; I use it to draw spaces, lines or patterns in the composition. See Tutti Frutti # 3 as an example of this.
