About Barbara Ann Scott

Every Artist dips his brush in his own soul, & paints his own nature into his pictures.

Barbara Ann Scott

BIO

Barbara was born and raised in Edinburgh Scotland where she trained as a teacher.  Art was always her first love and so she also attended evening classes at the Edinburgh College of Art and enrolled in art programmes with the Open University UK.  After emigrating to British Columbia, she obtained a Masters’ Degree in Art Education from the University of Victoria and continued to teach elementary students until her retirement.

In retirement, she has had more time and energy to devote to the development of her own creativity by attending many inspirational workshops with several renowned artists: Pat San Soucie, Gerald Brommer, Robert Burridge, Gwen Fox, Steven Aimone, Patricia Wheeler, Jane Davies, Joan Fullerton and most recently, Katherine Chang Liu.

As an Active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, she has exhibited in many juried shows and has received several awards for her work.  Pieces of her work are in private collections in British Columbia, the USA and the United Kingdom.

Artist’s Statement

My abstract art is very much a personal, exploratory and experimental journey with the elements of colour, line, shape and texture as my primary inspirations.  These help me express, in a non-objective way, concepts such as connectivity, communication strategies, the architecture of rock formations and the way shadow or light create mood and mystery.  I believe my art is also about story-telling and metaphor, often with elements of humour and whimsy.

As I work intuitively, an image can change and move beyond my original plans. I have no pre-conceived idea of how a piece will look when it is finished.  I begin with a loose idea as a starting point.   I try to stay relaxed and let the piece tell me what it needs with each application of paint, collage material or drawing.

Focusing on process helps me develop work that feels more authentic.  This process involves an interplay between intuitive mark-making and more deliberate intention, evaluation and editing.  Therefore, each time I add something to a work, it changes the whole piece and sets up new challenges to which I respond.  It takes practice and effort to stay in the now and resist the desire for a quick and easy resolution.  It also requires trust in my own intuition and aesthetics to go with the flow or remain in that Zen mode and not know ahead how a work will appear when finished.  I believe there is a vibrant and positive energy that emanates from original art.

My hope is that I can share feelings, experiences and perceptions, while imparting enough mystery for the viewer to explore, interpret and respond to an image in his/her own way.
